A siphon, also spelled syphon, is a clever device employed for transferring liquid from one container to another using a tube. This tube typically extends from the higher container, over a barrier like a wall or the edge of a container, and then descends into the lower container. The functioning of a siphon relies on the principle of atmospheric pressure and exploits the pressure difference between the two containers.
Here's how it works: When liquid, such as water, is poured into the upper container of a siphon, it flows downward through the tube and out of the lower end until the entire tube is filled with liquid. Once the tube is filled, the liquid continues to flow out of the lower end due to gravity and the pressure disparity between the two containers.
To ensure a smooth operation, it's crucial to ensure that the tube is completely filled with liquid before initiating the transfer process. This can be achieved by submerging the entire tube in the liquid and then placing one end in the upper container.
