We are seeking a highly skilled XRD Spectroscopist to join our materials characterization team within the Airlines & Aviation industry. In this role, you will be responsible for conducting X-ray diffraction analysis to support the development, qualification, and failure analysis of advanced aerospace materials and components. You will work closely with cross-functional teams including metallurgy, quality assurance, and engineering to ensure material integrity and performance. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with XRD instrumentation, data interpretation, and method development, ideally within an aerospace or high-reliability manufacturing environment. This is a contract internship position based in Antler, ND, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge aviation research. You will play a critical role in maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance while driving continuous improvement in material characterization processes.
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain X-ray diffraction (XRD) equipment, including sample preparation, data collection, and instrument calibration, to ensure accurate and reliable results.
- Interpret XRD patterns to identify phase composition, crystallographic structure, and microstructural features of aerospace alloys and coatings.
- Develop and validate new XRD methods for analyzing advanced materials, such as superalloys, composites, and thermal barrier coatings.
- Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to support root cause analysis of material failures and discrepancies in aircraft components.
- Prepare detailed technical reports and presentations summarizing XRD findings, and communicate results to internal stakeholders and customers.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., ASTM, NADCAP) and internal quality management systems during all testing activities.
- Manage sample inventory, maintain laboratory documentation, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for lab processes.
- Train and mentor junior technicians or interns on XRD techniques and safety protocols as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 9 years of hands-on experience with X-ray diffraction (XRD) in an industrial or research laboratory setting, ideally within aerospace or a similarly regulated industry.
- Deep knowledge of crystallography, phase analysis, and materials characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, EDS) is highly desirable.
- Proficiency with XRD software (e.g., HighScore, Jade, FullProf) and data analysis tools; familiarity with programming (Python, MATLAB) for automation is a plus.
- Strong understanding of aerospace material specifications and quality standards (e.g., AMS, ASTM).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing technical reports and presenting to diverse audiences.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced contract environment.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous learning; prior experience in an internship or mentoring role is beneficial.
